ABOUT US

The Church of Christ in Newbern, Tennessee is a group of Christians who are determined to "rightly divide the word of truth" and in so doing "show themselves approved to God" (2 Timothy 2:15)

We are here to offer you the necessities of your spiritual needs.

We have three works that are authorized by the scriptures: EVANGELISM, EDIFICATION, and BENEVOLENCE

 EVANGELISM:

This, and every, congregation of the Lord’s church is responsible to evangelize. This means to tell others the saving message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We must declare the truth of God’s word without changing it in any way.

This is important for you because I know that you want the truth concerning your soul’s salvation.  With something as important as the eternal destiny of your soul you don’t want just some opinion, some theory or form of belief. You want the truth and nothing but the truth. We are responsible for delivering that truth. Jesus promised; if we abide in His word we will know the truth and the truth will set us free (John 8:31-32).

We believe in speaking the truth in love. It is, however, impossible to deliver the truth without making some individuals uncomfortable. We cannot preach that everybody is okay, regardless of what the world may think. God’s word declares that there are two eternal places for the souls of mankind. One of the two places is Hell— a place of condemnation and sorrow (Matthew 25: 46). The other place is Heaven— a place of eternal life and joy (Matthew 25:34). Where we go is determined by how we have lived in this world. We must change our ways and conform to God’s will if we desire to see the place of eternal life and joy.

Every sermon presented here at the Church of Christ is ended with the invitation of Jesus Christ. We invite sinners to change their lives. This change is found through the plan of salvation established by the blood of Christ. Anyone who recognizes their sinful state can be freed from their sins if they… 1) Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (John 8:24)  2) Will confess that belief (Acts 8:37), 3) Will repent of their sins (Luke 13:3) and 4) Be baptized (Mark 16:16) in water for the remission of their sins. If you follow those steps you will then be in Christ and must remain faithful all the days of your life. This is where our work of edification finds its place.

EDIFICATION:

You may not be familiar with this term—edification. What it means, in its simplest form, is strengthening or reinforcing. We are responsible for strengthening one another.  This strengthening and relying on one another is important right from the first day one becomes a Christian. By becoming a Christian a narrow, difficult way is chosen. In most cases one’s life will be going in a direction that is against the grain of the world. We need to stick with our new commitment to Christ and it is not easy. It is important to find strength among the brethren—people who are on the same road— who understand the trials that you face because they have been there themselves.  We are commanded to care for one another (Romans 12:1-10).  It is through this network of care that we support each other and help each other reach the goal of heaven.

In other words edification is all about us helping you get to Heaven and you in turn helping each of us.  Along the way we may have needs that cannot be met without help. If we have done all that we can do and still fall short, there is help called benevolence.

BENEVOLENCE

Benevolence is help for those in need. More specifically according to the scriptures, it is help for saints—members of the church who are in need. Every Lord’s Day we take up this collection. This mony is used to accomplish the work of the church. We support the preacher with this money. We also supply this place in which to worship.  As well as all the necessary tools that go along with this place. Things such as songbooks and white boards and class books. We also use this money also to help members who are needy.  Many would disagree with this and say, "The needy are everywhere.” Although this is true the Lord’s treasury is not to be used for all those in need. It is specifically for saints (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:1-7).

We can take care of others in need on a personal level with our own individual funds. This is something that we do after considering each case that is presented. We are to use our own money wisely. We cannot and will not support bad habits or improper usage of our individual help.
